So, Philly’s new mayor Michael Nutter took office this week – and what did he do at his inaugural ball at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on Monday night? Performed Sugarhill Gang’s classic “Rappers Delight” with Questlove backing him on the decks. Fucking badass. Gotta love Philly for shit like this.

video of the week — health “heaven”

There’s always been something that awed me while watching the “ski jump” competition during the Olympics. Dudes barrel down a massive ramp at incredible speed before taking off into the air and landing (most of the time gracefully) 500 or so feet from where they left the Earth. There’s always that little part of you that hopes they wipe out on the landing (but are unharmed) too. To this day, I remain baffled to know how these “jumpers” are able to pretty much fly without getting seriously injured.

That’s what makes this unofficial, “fan-made” video for HEALTH’s “Heaven” so rad. “Heaven” serves as a fitting soundtrack to one of these soaring ski jumps in slow motion (which is actually the opening scene of Herzog’s The Great Ecstasy Of The Sculptor Steiner) — I can’t think of a better fit for the video or song. Plus, it’s perfect footage for the winter. Excited to see what the dudes from HEALTH come up with for the “official” video. Grab the mp3 below and check out the LA four-piece’s remixes over on their HEALTH // DISCO page.

YEASAYER

HIGH PLACES

TEAM ROBESPIERRE

CHAIRLIFT

Thanks to everyone who made it out on Saturday night to The Mercury Lounge for the final FRICTION show of 2007. It was the perfect cap for a year of great shows which began at Sin-e back in January. A big thank you to Brooklyn’s Yeasayer, High Places, Team Robespierre, and Chairlift for putting on such rad sets. I didn’t realize this until Saturday night, but this show marked all four bands Mercury Lounge debut. Also thanks to Darin and Greg of Finger On The Pulse for keeping the party moving in between sets.

Mr. Mammoth has a nice recap of Saturday’s show along with a live video of Yeasayer’s “Wait For The Summer,” which can be viewed below. Here’s a little excerpt of the review, head over to his site for the full post.

There was one storm that wasn’t forecasted yesterday, and that was the media one in effect on the Lower East Side. Bloggers, photographers, and media mavens of all sorts gathered at the clusterfucked Mercury Lounge for Yeasayer’s first New York show since CMJ, a sold out affair courtesy of FRICTION. [Mr. Mammoth]

Expect some more reviews popping up throughout the week, as Mr. Mammoth pointed already pointed out. Head over to our Flickr page for Pat’s photos from the night. We’re currently working on a few things for February and March at The Mercury Lounge. Stay tuned for more info.

video of the week — snoop dogg “sensual seduction”

OK, I’ll admit this song is a Chromeo rip-off, but the execution of the late 70s / early 80s theme is too good to deny. Directed by Melina, the video pays homage to Snoop’s idols like Rick James and Prince. Snoop keeps it real at the end of the song by bringing back his signature rap.

Speaking of Chromeo, they just added a second show at the Bowery after the first sold out. Get tics here.

Speed Racer Trailer

Here’s the movie trailer for one of my favorite cartoons growing up as a kid. The live action sequences and cast seem like tha bomb, though I’m not sure of Emile Hirsch playing the lead character. Christina Ricci as Trixie is a hot choice.
