Tuesday’s campaign stunt by Oxfam, the day before the G8 leaders arrived in Rostock for 2007’s G8 Summit, featured the infamous ‘Big Heads’ dressed as Pinnochio - the puppet figure whose nose grew every time he told a lie.
The day before their arrival for this year’s summit, the G8 are backpeddling on promises made only in 2005. Having told the world they would deliver an extra $50bn in aid, they look set to fall short by a massive $30 billion. If not brought on track at the German G8, this deceipt will cost the lives of 5 million people by 2010.
The stunt took place at the Port of Rostock, where the G8 Alternative Summit started on Wednesday. The speech bubbles are the symbol of the World Can’t Wait coalition’s “Voices Against Poverty.”
