The Mary Onettes | S/T

A friend knowing that I’m a fool for pretty much anything post-punk or new wave mentioned that I should check out The Mary Onettes. I thought what a horrible name for a band, they have to be cheesy. I’ve been pretty much in awe listening to their new self-titled album, nothing ground breaking or new here except I seemed mesmerized by the way they’re able to replicate a certain sound. Not shlocky, they do it well.

These Swedes seem to channel the ghost of New Order down to the stark Peter Saville-esque looking album cover. Plus you hear certain Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen influences throughout their sound, even Flock of Seagulls synths. You feel like you’re in an 80’s time warp when listening to these guys. Is that a good or bad thing? I’m not sure. Still check it out now on the great pop label Labrador Records, also home to fantastic groups like The Radio Dept and The Legends.
