Crackers United presents FRICTION | 5.12.07

FRICTION makes its return to The Mercury Lounge on Saturday, May 12th with a lineup featuring two of Baltimore’s and two of New York City’s best independent acts. It’s going to be one batshit crazy party headlined by Charm City’s Dan Deacon with support from Ponytail, Meneguar, and Lions and Tigers, who are fresh out of the studio.

Advance tickets are on sale now via Ticketweb for just $8 and it’s highly recommended you pick them up before the show. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $10. Stay tuned for drink specials and DJ’s. Chris Alker, a regular at Laila Lounge, Black and White, and Lolita will be handling the decks between sets and after the show. We’re still working on the booze!

Doors open at 8:00pm and set times are as follows: 11:30pm Dan Deacon / 10:30pm Ponytail / 9:30pm Meneguar / 8:30pm Lions and Tigers

Dan

“Baltimore’s Dan Deacon is possibly one of thee strangest motherfuckers in all the land of Indiedom. Though he’s a classically trained composer, he’s better known for his batshit live shows which are bizarre enough to leave most attendees completely bewildered, his Devo-like persona sometimes overshadowing his talent altogether. And since Deacon tours perpetually, that’s where most of his first impressions are made…supercharged new wave pop with all the prerequisites of the greatest late-00’s indie, its Animal Collective-esque pop experimentation, budget electronics, and vocodered vocals add up to a melody so goddamn manic and infectious, it’s basically all we want to hear today.” [Pitchfork]

Dan Deacon  ”The Crystal Cat”

Ponytail

Ponytail’s trad punk rock four-piece setup felt downright refreshing, like scouring your brain with a pumice stone. Chaos threatened at every zinging riff and bashed cymbal, but the tension came from the stop-on-a-dime precision with which the band beat the shit out of its instruments. Loud, sweaty, spazzy, and yet as tight as a shrunken sweater, Ponytail is one of the best young rock bands in Baltimore.” [Baltimore City Paper]

Ponytail  ”All Together Now”

Meneguar

Meneguar plays the rock music. The band’s sound pits rabid guitars playing off each other with the intensity of a knife fight, always-effective group singing, swaying bass lines and drums that roll more often than a soccer mom in a Chevy Tahoe. Taken all in, it’s a highly satisfying and incidentally versatile aesthetic: it would fit perfectly at some hipster deejay night, a road trip, a barbecue — it would even make a great soundtrack to wash your car to. Holy shit: This is movie-montage music.” [Prefix]

Meneguar  ”Bury A Flower”

Lions

Lions and Tigers play a brand of post punk that is totally infectious and danceable. But aside from some pop leanings, the band keeps a thread of darkness thoughout with vocal and musical ferocity. Their latest record, ZAIRE, boasts textured compositions that feature church pianos, evil bass, and a synth-guitar attack that adds a gritty power to their overall sound.” [The L Magazine]

Lions and Tigers  ”Zaire”
