if my eyes were closed last night at hiro ballroom i would have thought that i was hearing a continuous dj set of soulwax’s nite versions lp. instead, my eyes were a wide open witness to the boys from belgium (dressed head-to-toe in white and backed by pink and white striped matting) playing the entirety of nite versions LIVE on stage. the band was really fucking tight as their beats penetrated new york city’s tough outer skin, sending the partygoers into an hour-long dancing frenzy. the whole band was enegetic, but drummer Steve Slingeneyer, positioned at the front of the stage and half sitting/standing, seemed like he had more sparks than I did, crazily pounding out booming thuds that shook my heart and destroyed my eardrums. we stuck around for a second dose of the dewaele brothers and their 2 many djs set, which got us some hype – but nothing was going to live up to the live experience we had just witnessed. check them out tonight at studio b and download their remix of klaxons’ “gravity’s rainbow” to get you hype.
