Damero | Happy in Grey

We have certainly been seeing a lot of gray skies here in New York City recently, but the last couple of days have been unbearable. I thought the end was finally here this morning, as I left my apartment and the sun started to peek through the dark sky and cast its rays on the dreary dripping buildings. Unfortunately, clouds quickly covered up the first traces of sun my eyes have seen in days and I felt like running back upstairs, calling in sick, and curling up in bed for the rest of the day.

Berlin’s Damero seems to take solace in shades of gray as her debut LP states, she’s Happy in Grey. Her MySpace page states “I’m siiiiinging in the rain…” and that’s exactly what is heard on on the record. Enveloped in melancholy atmospheric sounds and swathes of gray, Damero let’s her classically trained voice shine through like the sun peeking through the clouds. The results are soft and warming instead of cold and isolated, making it the perfect music to curl up in bed to on days like these.

Damero (real name Marit Posch) had been working in promotions for BPitch Control and doing vocals for Apparat’s Shapemodes EP and tracks with Modeselektor, while secretly working on her own electronic music at home on her laptop. Apparently, Ellen Allien (head of the BPitch Control label) heard a few of Damero’s tracks and was impressed with what she heard, resulting in Posch collaborating with producer Henri Hagenow, Apparat, Zander VT, and others to record Happy in Grey.

Happy In Grey is a delicate, well-crafted debut from Posch and although it’s not dancefloor ready, it should make an excellent addition to the already strong BPitch roster. Pick up a copy from Amazon or Forced Exposure and check out the track “Mope” below.
