Next month’s FRICTION is about one thing, and one thing only, gettin’ drizzed. That’s right, we’re turning The Delancey into a wall-to-wall sweaty-faced DANCE party, mixing things up with a little hip-hop and electro as we celebrate the 2nd birthday of CrackersUnited.com with a killer lineup featuring Toronto’s Holy Fuck, Philadelphia’s Plastic Little, and New York City’s Vampire Weekend and Dreamburger.
In addition, robot Blair from Music For Robots will be spinning between sets and afterwards and as always, we’ll be hosting an open Sparks! bar from 9:00pm-10:00pm.
Doors open at 8:00pm and advance tickets are available on Ticketweb. Set times are as follows: 11:30pm Holy Fuck / 10:30pm Plastic Little / 9:30pm Vampire Weekend / 8:30pm Dreamburger

“I had the good fortune of seeing these crazy crazy guys perform live a few weeks back at the Mercury Lounge in NYC…it was off the fucking hook. Seriously, totally bananas. Their songs made me want to run around in circles and fall down, or jump up and down and rock-kick my feet out in all directions. It was insanity in a nutshell.” [Music For Robots]
Holy Fuck ”Junglor” (live at La Tulipe)

“Philadelphia’s four-piece hip-hop crew
Plastic Little rocks some seriously funny rap. Like Spank Rock, these guys are dirty, hilarious and have hooks and beats that are entirely addictive. Plus, their influences are diverse. They got the mighty Ghostface Killah to lend his flow to their track “Crambodia,” but Plastic Little have also covered The Cure’s “Close to Me” (with updated lyrics that would definitely make Robert Smith cry, either in laughter or in horror) and have sampled The Smiths and PJ Harvey in their songs. These guys certainly march to the beat of their own drum machine, and have the talent to draw the fans of several music genres.” [

“
Vampire Weekend, a quartet of Columbia kids, offer up damn-near perfect pop tunes …with an endearing sincerity we can only hope survives a rocket to stardom. But don’t mistake their earnest ‘tudes for naïveté; the boys write beyond their years, with pointed, often sardonic commentary soaring over ebullient keys in sing-a-long verse.” [

Vampire Weekend ”Oxford Comma” (via Earfarm)

“And this must be some filthy IM exchange between members of the ADD teenage ghetto-core mafia,
Dreamburger sound like M.I.A. on acid or Fox & Wolf possessed by Satan or something.” [

It’s been Explosions in the Sky overload all week for me. Monday’s show at Warsaw was kind of a let down because of the huge venue and lack of crowd enthusiasm. Maybe it was because my fellow Texans played four new songs from their new album All of A Sudden I Miss Everyone that was just released Tuesday. I’m guessing the crowd didn’t know the new stuff. Tuesday’s intimate 1-hour set at the Society for Ethical Culture was simply amazing. Perfect acoustics. Then I rushed home to watch their first ever national TV appearance on Conan O’Brien. A tight truncated version of “Welcome, Ghosts” was played.

I remember when MTV Unplugged in New York was released in 1994, seven months after Cobain’s death. My friend was still wearing her white “RIP Kurt Cobain” t-shirt regularly, which had a huge print of his face on the front and 1967-1994 in black letters across the bottom. I asked her when she was going to stop wearing the shirt, and she simply replied “never.” I knew it was a touchy subject with her, so I didn’t take the conversation any further. Like her t-shirt, Unplugged didn’t stray far from me over the next year and at the time it felt like the last piece of Cobain we were going to get. I treasured that album. Eventually, my friend phased the t-shirt out of her wardrobe, but none of us ever really phased Nirvana out of our lives, like many other tweens/teens at the time they were that one band that got us into music for good.

Check out this video of Plastic Little‘s “The Jump Off” which serves as a little preview for our upcoming FRICTION show (full details next week). You gotta love the Boston Terrier holdin’ it down in the video – Boston Terriers everywhere show much respect. RIP Boston Bob.
Don’t forget, A Sunny Day in Glasgow is in town tomorrow night, playing their only NYC date at The Delancey for the Neon Lights Party.
In the meantime, if anyone sees “two elephants drivin’ suckin’ a dudes dick with suicide doors,” take a couple of pictures, that shit would be the jump off.

Let me start off by saying that I consider myself to be a music junkie. To that, let me add that I am a very mellow, laid-back, don’t really give much of a damn kinda guy. So it should come as little to no surprise that I LOVE electronica, ambient, chill-out, shoegaze, or any other number of the sub-genres that exist. Some of my faves? Thanks for asking and taking an interest – it makes me feel special. I thought that Ulrich Schnauss‘s A Strangely Isolated Place was the best album of 2004. And I do mean the best of all albums put out that year. I carry it with me everywhere I go. Another one that I always have on me is Talkie Walkie by Air. Their newest offering, Pocket Symphony, is slated for a March 5th release. Let me share how I first encountered this duo.
Sometime in the early part of this century, before I was smart enough to ask a very important question on February 29, 2004, my then girlfriend made me a mix CD. On that CD was a curious little ditty entitled “The Word ‘Hurricane’” from the soundtrack (ok, the score if you want to be all nitpicky about it) for The Virgin Suicides. It was an intriguing number but didn’t really resonate with me. Fast forward to waiting in a theater for a movie to start in 2004 (yes, I do remember the movie – it was Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban *sticks out his tongue*). You know those annoying “segments” before the previews where you, the audience, are assaulted by ads for new musical artists and upcoming TV shows and commercials trying to make the armed forces look cool? During one of those, the announcer introduced me to Air’s “Cherry Blossom Girl.” I was smitten instantly. I turned to my friend’s husband (who is a music lover of all genres as well) to see his thoughts. The song didn’t even register on his radar; it was background noise. But not for me. It was the start of a journey to absorb, to take in, to breathe as much Air as I could…
I’m not going to entertain you with my thoughts on every Air CD that I have been able to listen to, but I will tell you this – Talkie Walkie is my favorite. I was wondering when I’d hear something new from them…and in the form of an email, my question was answered. There is an organization that is artist run called Art For Progress that has put together an album release/listening party for Air’s latest, Pocket Symphony, in addition to showcasing indie artists of the electronica, downtempo, ambient, chill-out vibe. The event, Tripnotica, is being held at The Delancey this Sunday night. There’s only a $10 admission, but for that $10, I get to not only listen to the new Air CD, but I also get to check out some unknown talent and just lounge in the vibe. I haven’t even put my cash in the hands of the cashier, but I consider it money well spent already. I plan to be out for the whole shebang since I am lucky enough to have President’s day off. You’ll probably be hearing all about it sometime after I return from my chilled out stupor. But I’m ready for a hypnotic trip…no narcotics here, baby. What am I high on? I’m going to be getting high just off the Air that I breathe…

The Lionheart Brothers feature members from two of my favorite bands of the last two years, Serena Maneesh and 120 Days. The band consists of Marcus Forsgren, Frantz Andreassen, Audun Storset, Peter Rudolfsen, and Morten Øby and recently released Dizzy Kiss, their second full-length and first release since 2004′s Colour Contrast Context EP.
The Norweigan five-piece has been making music since 1999 and already garnered themselves a pretty solid reputation in their home country, notably due to their energetic live shows. Now the group is ready to bring their swirly psychedelic surf rock and slide guitar melodies over to the U.S. and make a splash at this year’s SXSW. Fellow countryman, Sondre Lerche already seems to be hip to the band as he stated the following on his online diary, Punchlines:
“I simply have to mention another magical song that I encountered on the radio at home before Christmas. I don’t mean to be overly patriotic or nationalistic, but this song, ’50 Souls & A Disco Bowl’, by Norwegian band The Lionheart Brothers is so gott damn good, that my reaction the first time I heard it was half in love and half in hate.”
The Lionheart Brothers play SXSW on March 15th at Emo’s Jr. and will also be stopping in New York City beforehand for a show at Tonic on March 12th. Hopefully they’ll add a couple more U.S. dates. Check out “Hero Anthem†from Dizzy Kiss below.
