Tall Hands | Tall Hands EP

I’ve been semi-obsessed with the video for “Three Full Virginias” by New York City-based Tall Hands. A good friend of mine let me borrow an advance copy of the band’s self-titled debut EP a few months ago. I liked what I heard on first listen, but for some reason didn’t go back to listening to the EP until after that same friend showed me the video for “Three Full Virginias.” I’m not sure if it was the beards, the dinosaurs, or what – but something clicked. I found myself walking out the door yesterday morning singing, “We said three full virginias…on our way to the top.” Catchy.
The band describes their sound as “boat rock.” I’m not exactly sure what that means, but on the EP’s opener, “Fifteen On Ice,” frontman Justin Raisen channels a more upbeat Lou Reed, while “Medici” serves as an ode to dreamy psych-pop of The Velvet Underground. The rest of the songs on the record retain the Reed-like vocals but are more straight up catchy blues/garage rock. “It Won’t Be Longer” has flourishes of Television’s guitar explorations and the sextet shines on “On Top Of Time,” my favorite track of the 7-song EP.
The Tall Hands EP is out now via Pulse Recording (Los Angeles) and available on iTunes and Amazon. Check out the video for “Three Full Virginias” here and the band at Fat Baby on November 18th.
