Beach House | Cake Shop 11.01.06 (Carpark CMJ Show)

Work (unfortunately I don’t get paid for blogging) has been kicking my ass all week and the Village Halloween Parade left me feeling like I got clocked in the face with a cinderblock. Is there really a need to continuously rev your motorcycle’s engine at 4-in-the-morning? I tried to make it out Tuesday night to Monsters Are Waiting, but the show was sold out. Battering Room seemed to enjoy their set though. Last night, I finally made it out for my first show of CMJ with cracker Christian to catch Baltimore’s Beach House at Cake Shop.

I have been loving their self-titled debut and was really excited to see how it translated on stage. The duo of Victoria Legrand (vocals/keyboards) and Alex Scally (guitar) opened their set to a full room with “Apple Orchard” followed by a new song inspired by the classic country sound of Emmylou Harris and Patsy Cline. After catching their live show, I realized how much they remind me of Broadcast’s Tender Buttons. Unlike Broadcast, Beach House never sounds cold, retaining the hazy psychedelic warmth of The Zombies and Mazzy Star.

Live, Legrand’s is just as beautiful and haunting as she is on the album, crooning about lost loves and longing, “Love you all the time/Even though you’re not mine.” Her saddened eyes conveyed a heartache all too real, leaving me to appreciate their simplistic beauty even more as I strolled home through the autumnal streets of the city.
