Filter Magazine informs us that Los Angeles’ Midnight Movies have come out of hiding for the release of their new single “Patient Eye.” I couldn’t be happier with this news since I fell in love with their sound on their self-titled debut. The release of this single serves as a teaser for their second LP, Lion The Girl, due in March 2007.
Over the last year, Midnight Movies had a bit of a lineup change. Jason Hammons left the band to start a new project called Dead Ponies, while vocalist Gena Oliver has given up the drums to Sandra Vu and now focuses on the organ. Larry Schemel still handles the guitar for the group, while Ryan Wood was added as the bassist and keyboardist. The resulting sound is more stripped down with Oliver’s haunting vocals dominating the restrained guitars and moody melodies. Think Broadcast’s Tender Buttons.
The new single comes out digitally on October 24th, while the limited-edition CD and 7-inch will be available at the band’s single release show at Spaceland in Los Angeles on Friday November 17th. The b-side of the single will be a cover of Syd Barrett’s “Golden Hair.” Check out “Patient Eye” below.
