With a sci-fi name like Scanners, you kind of expect a band to play some prog-rock and sing about 12-sided dice and aliens. Surprisingly, these Londoners play a mixed genre that includes new wave, pop, blues and post-punk which I would categorize as straight up rock. Isn’t it tough to categorize alot of bands these days? I was immediately drawn to their single ‘Lowlife’ simple but catchy riff and the opening lines I know you’re not ready to live/ Are you ready to die?.
Singer/bassist Sarah Daly sounds like a cheated woman forgetting her troubles in some smokey dive bar during the middle of the day. I can’t put my finger on it, but her voice is a bit of a jaded mix of Janis Joplin, Debbie Harry and Karen O. Their debut album ‘Violence is Golden’ out recently on Dim Mak is a stylishly put together album that I keep imagining would be popular among a fast fashion crowd (reminds of B.R.M.C. first album). They’re like four beautifully hip band members on a fashion runway playing for a crowd. ‘Violence is Golden’ has been getting some serious spins on my CD player. Get yourself a copy. I hear they may be in town in November for CMJ.
