Citizens Here and Abroad | Waving, Not Drowning

San Francisco’s Citizens Here and Abroad team up with Turn Records (Thee More Shallows) for the release of their sophmore album, Waving, Not Drowning.

Citizens Here and Abroad spawned in 2002 when members of Secardora and Dealership met at a bar called Tip Top in San Francisco, rounding out a lineup with vocalist Adrienne Robillard, guitarist Dan Lowrie, drummer Chris Wetherell, and bassist/vocalist Chris Groves. The quartet’s brooding alternative pop songs with shoegaze roots are packed with layered melodies, swirling angular guitars, and fronted by the boy/girl vocals of Robillard and Groves, drawing them comparisons to early Lush. To some extent, the 11-tracks on Waving, Not Drowning chronicle relationships gone sour from a variety of perspectives. For example, on one of my favorite songs off the album, “In The Dark,” Robillard sings “keeping it all in the dark, is taking it too extremes, cause I saw your car parked outside the house in the driveway at dawn, I don’t know what it’s all about.”

Waving, Not Drowning is available now via your favorite retailer including iTunes, eMusic, or directly from the label. The band has two New York City dates scheduled including a show at Pianos on Saturday, October 7th and The Annex on Monday, October 9th.
