After a failed attempt to sell my PSP on Craigslist this week, I took a quick look for a new flat screen TV. I figured why not take a look and see if some divorsee in the West Village or something has one they are dying to get rid of. Monday I found this listing:

The TV is still available for sale and in great condition it also includes the warranty which is having 2yrs on it.I’m selling it so cheap becasue I need an urgent payment to take care of an issue I want to assure you of one thing that despite the fact I’m selling it so cheap it is still working perfectly and I have only used it for 2 months. It is at fedex location in wyoming . Please don’t get confussed about the TV at fedex location in wyoming the reason is due to the fact that I almost lost it to a scammer there so I had to instruct fedex to hold it up for me at their office. If you are interested in buying it I’ll not be able to receive cash because I’m kinda busy working on a case in Florida right now. all I will need to proceed is your contact info so I can get it shipped to you. As for the payment Money order or Western union will be ok. But, I would prefer you making the payment through western union money transfer because that will be much easier and convenient to me. once I get the TV shipped to you, I will provide you the shipment label and tracking number for you to confirm it has been shipped. So a couple thoughts came across my little brain: “If she is working on a case in Florida, she must be a lawyer and have enough $$ to buy 3 more flat screens”…“Why is she so trusting of me to wait for me to receive the TV before I send the the final payment”…“who the hell lives in Wyoming?”…“what hair color do they put on the driver’s licenses of bald men?”…so I ask her for more info on the exact payment instructions before I commit and I get back a response in a few hours:

You would think a real pro would get a little suspicious of all the questions about sending the money. This yahoo must be really desperate to make these stupid mistakes. He is probably running several of these and getting the emails mixed up. I am glad someone is tracking these schemes. It seems they are more prevalent every day. I guess the old saying stands ” If it seems to good to be true, IT’S CRAP!!!!Save your money people, if your that desperate to spend it, I will happily send you a WU location to send it to. I would even send you a thank you note!

This scam is so obvious that it is hard to believe anyone will fall for it. There are two things you need to know…If it is too good to be tru, it probably is. And on Craigslist, do local pickups ONLY. Every Nigerian is not a sam artist and it is really unfortunate that the name of that country is being dragged thrrough the mud by a few people.
Reading through all these comments one thing is very evident - greed. Why would you expect anyone in their right mind to sell you a good plasma TV worth thousands od dollars for less than $500? Also why would you believe any guy that tells you it is in a different city and you need to pay before you see it?
I buy and sell on Craigslist but I will buy those items I can pick up myself. And I won’t pay you unless I test the item to ensure it works properly. This is only common sense.
I sell on Craigslist but it’s either cash payment or Paypal, period. Recently a guy (or lady) wanted to scam me by saying he wants to pay me using Money Order from some website, I told him to go to hell…
That is how you do it - either you see the item you are paying for or no deal.
Not all Nigerians are scammers. I know. I am a Nigerian and I have never and I never will, scam anyone.
Good luck. I hope you recover your funds and put that SOB in prison at the same time.

Actually, if you search online, these guys really ARE quite desperate. There are a few sites out there that chronicle antics such as getting these guys to send photos of them selves (Which are then sent to the FBI), and I remember reading one where the guy actually got one of the scammers to travel to Europe to meet him. He had pictures and all. I say scam the scammer, it’s more fun that way.

Hey we are currently in the middle of the Kenneth Schlein scam. We made the stupid mistake of already sending 150, and he kept asking for more but we said we were going to wait until the television arrived. This is horrible and unacceptable. I too have been scammed out of $250. I can’t afford to have a loss like this, as many of us can’t.What can we do to get this guy caught and get our money back?

It may be that filing claims against Fed Ex, for the flaw in their system and allowing these 146 lb. shipping labels to be generated- Western Union for allowing transfers to “Paul Richardson” to continue to be made; and Craig’s List, for allowing this now well documented scam to continue to be posted
is the best thing to do.

What’s even worse if have been scammed by them is that you soon be hit with efforts to have you ‘update’ or ‘unsuspend’ your PayPal account - report these to spoof@paypal.com, as they link you to a phony PayPal website - phising expiditions to try to get you to divulge Bank of America or Wells Fargo information, or the ‘you just won a foreign lottery scam’

Use your head, if you are foolish enough to wire cash to someone you don’t know in another country and the cash has been picked up, how in the world do you expect to get it back?
