The Shackeltons are Mark Redding on vocals, guitarist’s Eric Fisak and Daniel Schuchman, bassist Justin McDaniel, and Sean Hallock on drums.

After hearing KEXP play The Shackeltons all week long, we decided to see what all the fuss was about and caught their set at Pianos on Saturday night. Aside from a few jitters early in their set, this five-piece from Chambersburg, PA showed A LOT of potential. I had only heard a couple songs before going to the show and was really impressed with the band’s other material. Their live show is a rollercoster of urgency that quells into calmer, quieter moments. Frontman, Mark Redding feeds off his band’s energy, softly speaking through a megaphone during the quieter moments and shouting his way through the fiery assaults of the dual guitars when the band revs it up.

The Shackeltons incorporate a broad range of influences into their sound, combining the dynamics and intensity of Slint’s quiet-loud pattern with the angular guitar riffs of DC bands like Fugazi and Jawbox rounded out with echoing guitars reminiscent of The Chameleons and Interpol. The band reminds me a lot of Portland, Oregon’s The Dutch Flat, who put out one of my favorite releases in 2003. The Shackeltons are definitely a band to keep an eye on.
