There’s something kitschy-catchy-cool-real about Baby Dayliner (real name Ethan Marunas) that I dig. The pompadour’d New Yorker got his name from a Big Daddy Kane record. This one-man band has a voice that sounds like Ian Curtis, croons and looks like a smooth Rat Packer, and sings hip-hop hyperbole over early New Order-esque 80’s synthesizer beats. All my favorites wrapped up in one, he’s like a talented one-man performance karaoke show. His new album, Critics Pass Away, is out today on Brassland.
I love this description: “Pitched bizzarely between caberet crooning and lo-fi hiphop karaoke, Ethan’s low-slung voice has a resounding impact on his songs, filling every with moment earnest passion. Imagine Frank Sinatra living it up with Bernard Sumner in Compton circa 1984.”
