The shoegaze/dream-pop trio, Secret Shine was formed in Bristol, England in 1991 by vocalist Jamie Gingell and guitarist Scott Purnell. The group released a couple of singles via Sarah Records including “After Yearsâ€, “Ephemeralâ€, and “Loveblind†as well as their debut LP, Untouched, in 1993. Sarah Records was an interesting little label started in 1987 and dedicated to the 7†single as the only true pop format, an attack on over-production of music, and over-pricing. During the labels existence, Sarah Records mainly released twee pop, but began to put out more shoegaze music in the mid 90s. Sarah Records continued releasing music into 1995, and that same year also marked Secret Shine’s last recording.
Fast forward to 2005 and Secret Shine are back together recording new material. The result of those recordings is the lush 3-song Elemental EP (Track listing: 1-You are Inside, 2-Evermore 3- Adored). Just as new bands are drawing on the shoegaze sounds of the early 90s, Secret Shine revisits their own sound creating lusher and fuller instrumentals that mend beautifully with the vocals of Kathryn Smith. The band is planning on the release of a second single this month and are expecting the release of an album later this year. The Elemental EP can be purchased via tonevendor. Check out a few clips from the EP below. RIYL: Lush, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Pale Saints…
