She doesn’t know that I left my urge in the ice box…

Mr. Neal and I had the priviledge of running into Interpol frontman Paul Banks Saturday morning at 5 AM in front of my apartment on a drunken night… He was cool and I, under the unique position of my Spanish upbringings, could test the theory of his fluency in Spanish (he is totally fluent).

However, this encounter, fun as it was, posed this new question in my mind… Is it really a good idea to talk to people whose art you admire??
Consider the dangers:
I love Interpol. I really do… The are one of my favorite all time bands. Up there with Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros, and other freaking amazing people…

But what if Paul had been an asshole, the biggest asshole there ever was (he wasn’t… he was very nice and took some pictures with us and talked for a bit, very polite, very nice, but still, the point of this post is valid). What if the person that sings to your heart was the biggest idiot ever? Would that not make you feel weird next time you hear ‘Leif Erikson‘? Would that not take away from your overall appreciation of the band and the music? Is it really worth it losing the appreciation you have for someone’s art?? It’s a very tricky situation… I would not want anyone, not Paul Banks, not Jonsi, to take away from the love and the feeling I get when I hear their music…

With this in mind… Should one approach artists when you run into them? Even if they are just coming out of the deli as you walk in? It seems to me that there is more to lose than to gain.

What if you talked about the meaning you had given to a seemingly obscure song and the person who wrote it tells you you are wrong and tells you that in reality when he talks about “our love is a pony” he is really talking about how horse poo stinks??

It’s one of those tricky things, ’cause who can resist approaching one of these people and let them know how much better they make our everyday meaningless existance?
Just one of my retarded reflections… Then again I may just be drunk…

But this is not going to stop me from screaming “WHAT UP PAAAAUL!!” when I see Interpol live…

reminds me of the time i ran into lars ulrich at the embarcadero movie theater in san francisco. growing up he was on a short list of drumming idols…will calhoun, eddy vanhalen, and tony thompson to name just a few. i nervously stood directly behind him in the ticket line until i couldn’t handle it any longer. i tapped him on the shoulder, he turned and i told him that i have appreciated his drumming for years and that the dozens of metallica concerts had been outstanding (or something to that effect). he then simply said…’so what’ and turned back around. SO WHAT?! we all know after the whole napster debacle that he’s a serious ass, but at the time i still considered him one of the best artists out there. fucker crushed me. funny enough, later that month i drove behind him and his rail-thin model wife in a parking garage…oh how easily it would have been to run them both down and have my 15 minutes. needless to say, i’m pretty hesitant to approach anyone else.

So Jay does see my point… the dangers of adoration of an unknown being. Maybe that’s why I am an atheist, so that if I met god, I would not be disapointed :-)
